Tube-Opera «Werther»

Young Werther is madly in love with Charlotte, but she is already promised to another. This only makes the passionate dreamer’s love burn even more ardently; he rebels against a bourgeois life that is steered purely by reason and that leaves no room for dreams. Out of a sense of duty, Charlotte nonetheless marries her fiancé Albert, although she is also in love with Werther. Desperate that he cannot have the woman he loves, Werther takes his own life. The epistolary novel Die Leiden des jungen Werther made Goethe, who was 23 when it was published, famous over night and triggered a veritable Werther fever. Today’s young generation hardly writes letters, but even today, young people share their emotional state with the public on social media. The fate of a love-sick young man is as topical today as ever. Using this Sturm und Drang plot, we will film expressive scenes and set them to Massenet’s stirring, emotionally atmospheric music. The young participants will be supported in this project by a videographer and drama teacher.
