While she is travelling with her cousin Lescaut, 16-year-old Manon enjoys turning men’s heads. Des Grieux, a student from a well-to-do family, falls in love with her. They run away to Paris, where Manon lives her dream of love, liberty and adventure. However, before long, Manon allows herself to be seduced by Geronte’s wealth – only to yearn for Des Grieux a short time later. She succeeds in winning Des Grieux back, and he attempts to improve his financial situation by gambling. Manon is torn between her desire for profound love and her craving for affluence. The story ends with Manon’s death, having fallen seriously ill after a spell in prison. She dies in Des Grieux’s arms. In this workshop, we will seek to interpret dramatic scenes from the libretto on film, accompanied by the colourfully iridescent music of Massenet’s opera.
