Abstract
KINO: Springtime in Amsterdam
A historic moment, an outstanding cast, a gorgeous city and music ranging from Viennese operetta to Dutch and French chansons to songs from the Great American Songbook - that is Springtime in Amsterdam, the first music film by opera director Christof Loy.
It tells the story of four cosmopolitans at the crossroads of their lives who meet by chance in Amsterdam. Each of them has different expectations and within 48 hours a confusion arises that must be resolved. The city becomes their magical dream world, seemingly offering opportunities and answers to a key moment in their lives.
When Christof Loy, director of La rondine, was stranded in Amsterdam during the first corona-related lockdown, the spontaneous idea to make a film was born. The cast included Annette Dasch, Sunnyi Melles, Theresa Kronthaler, Thomas Oliemans, Henk Poort, Barry Atsma and the Dutch National Ballet. The fantastic soundtrack was recorded by the choir of the Dutch National Opera, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra and the Dutch String Collective under the direction of Marko Letonka.

Annette, a diva soprano, temporarily without projects, is on her way to Paris but ends up in Amsterdam. Thomas, a poor Dutch musician/writer trying to earn money as a tour guide, picks her up at the station. Annette falls in love with him and hides the fact that she is a singer by pretending to be a hairdresser. He offers her his flat and makes her think it is an annex to a 5-star hotel, which he pretends is being renovated. Thomas' best friend and roommate, Henk, works at the hotel as a receptionist. At the same time, Norman, an American composer, is on his way to Vienna in search of his roots and is staying in Amsterdam. He stays in the same 5-star hotel where Henk works and falls in love with Theresa, the chambermaid. Walking through Amsterdam at night, he ends up in a bar where he meets Sunnyi, a strange and surreal figure. As he walks along, Norman discovers by chance that Theresa also works as a prostitute in the red light district. Annette is lured back into her old life by her agent Matthias, which shatters Thomas' dream of a life together with her. In the end, only Thomas remains, alone with his melancholy and his music.
