Two masterpieces of piano chamber music are on the program of the lunch/brunch concert in March. Members of the Philharmonia Zurich and pianist Kateryna Tereshchenko will perform Ernst von Dohnányi's Piano Quintet No. 1 in C minor op. 1 and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Piano Sextet in D major op. 110. Johannes Brahms himself could not have done it better, he said of Dohnányi's Opus 1, which he wrote in 1895 when he was only 17 years old and still very much in the Romantic tradition. Another early work is Mendelssohn's Piano Sextet, written a good seventy years earlier, a cheerful miniature concerto for piano, which is juxtaposed with the five string instruments.

For our series of brunch and lunch concerts, musicians of the Philharmonia Zürich present work trouvailles in various constellations, familiar pieces in unusual arrangements, and aural adventures the likes of which you’ve never heard before. These chamber concerts take place in the relaxed yet intimate atmosphere of the magnificent Opernhaus Spiegelsaal.
