Crunch, munch… Who’s eating?

Hansel and Gretel live with their parents in abject poverty, plagued by hunger. Everyone has to pull their weight to survive, be it by tying brooms, weaving baskets, or other chores. However, the children would rather play and dance than work. Their mother is angry with the two lazybones, and in her fury spills the milk for the rice pudding. She therefore chases the children off into the forest to gather berries. Humperdinck’s opera portrays the hardships of everyday life for a poor family in the 19th century. In our holiday workshop, we will examine the question of how our diet has changed since then and what significance food has in our own time. How long do we have to work for a meal? How have our eating habits changed? Since when have there been sweets? Of course, we will also sing the folk songs from the fairy-tale opera, dance and act out scenes from the piece.
