Innovative 3D-Audio Technology
Music of the future for a farewell concert
Alongside the interpretation, what is the most important aspect of a concert? The sound. Sound transmits both intensity and emotion. Sound is formed by the space it fills, by the performers, and by the audience. During the pandemic, digital formats have helped provide audience members at home with some of the aspects of live performance. Now, in order to bring audiences even closer, the Opernhaus Zürich will present something brand new to classical audiences.
For Fabio Luisi’s farewell concert on June 19, streaming viewers will be able to choose between stereo sound and 3D sound. This 3D audio technology comes from the gaming and virtuality reality sectors. Its use for a symphonic concert breaks completely new ground.
This 3D sound provides audiences with a listening experience that is strikingly more realistic, one that also factors in the performance space and those in it. It takes the familiar stereo sound from left and right, and adds in the space above, below, and all around. Listeners are surrounded by a «Klangkugel», or «sound sphere», that envelopes them, giving them the impression that they’re in the middle of the action, immersed in 360-degree sound. The only prerequisite is the use of headphones. And with over-ear models, you’ll get the full experience.
