Verklärte Nacht
Abstract
Verklärte Nacht
The sextet Verklärte Nacht is one of the most popular works by Arnold Schoenberg. Musically, it is still in the tradition of late Romanticism. At its premiere in 1902, however, its programmatic background was a scandal: the poem of the same name by Richard Dehmel, to which the composer referred, deals with free love. Ann-Katrin Stöcker (piano), Vera Lopatina (violin) and Xavier Pignat (cello) will perform the work in a version for piano trio by Schönberg's student Eduard Steuermann. In addition, this brunch/lunch concert will feature the Piano Trio in D major by the young Richard Strauss.
Once again this season, various ensemble formations of the Philharmonia Zurich present chamber music in the loosely intimate series of our brunch and lunch concerts. Together with the musicians, you will discover trouvailles of works, well-known works in unusual arrangements and listening adventures of a special kind.
The chamber concerts take place in the magnificent Spiegelsaal of the Opera House. Afterwards, we look forward to welcoming you to the new Bernadette Restaurant for brunch or lunch à la carte.
