Das Rheingold is the first part of the Ring des Nibelungen. Right at the beginning, the central conflict of Wagner's world theatre is presented here: «Only those who renounce the power of love» - as the Rhinemaidens sing - can harness the magical power of the gold hidden deep in the Rhine and attain almost immeasurable power. Love and power are therefore mutually exclusive. Das Rheingold is the most fairytale-like part of the tetralogy; alongside gods and Nibelungs, giants, dwarves, mermaids and the mythical primordial entity Erda dominate the action.
