At the Opernhaus Zürich an extraordinary modern music theatre concept is being realized. It will be accompanied by two concerts.

3 Mar to 13 Apr 2024Franz Kafka’s novel fragment Amerika, written at the beginning of the 20th century, anticipated the great crises of modernity. Left unfinished, it tells the story of Karl Rossmann's nightmarish journey through life to America, with its great promises of happiness. Composer Roman Haubenstock-Ramati has turned it into a work of music theater that enjoys legendary status. The opera has only been performed twice since its premiere, but remains one of the landmarks of opera composition in the 20th century.

In conversation, he provides information about his life and thoughts. Haubenstock-Ramati was born in Poland, deported to Siberia during the Second World War and finally ended up in Palestine and Tel Aviv before retiring in Vienna. He is considered a pioneer in 20th century music.
